Over two decades after the march of the Ten Thousand a mysterious conqueror appears in the lands of the Macht. He is passionate, a visionary and with his unconventional warfare he wins victory upon victory. His name is Corvus and he will stop at nothing to have Rictus, the now legendary leader of the Ten Thousand, by his side.
There are some notable differences between ‘Corvus’ and its predecessor. For one thing, even though the prose is still outstanding, it is more down-to-earth as it was in ‘The Ten Thousand’, cutting down on the metaphors and such. Also, in ‘The Ten Thousand’ there was not so much a single protagonist, with the Macht mercenary army as an entity taking up the leading role, while this book is clearly centered around one person, viz, Rictus. In part it was exactly that daring offbeatness of ‘The Ten Thousand’ that held a lot of its charm and it cannot be denied that in this respect the follow-ups are less unique. However, these remarks are not at all meant as criticism, since ‘Corvus’ is absolutely a magnificent book. Like part one of the trilogy this is not a story about good against bad. On the one hand one can marvel at the bigger picture that the conqueror Corvus has in mind, while at the same time you can completely understand the desire of the Macht to fight and protect their independence. Both sides of the conflict are portrayed with equal sincerity. In ‘The Macht’ series war does not consist of heroic deeds by gifted princes saving the princess against impossible odds. No, war is fought between ordinary soldiers forfeiting their lives. The terror of man-to-man battle is described with such frightening realism that the tension is brought to nearly unbearable heights making it simply impossible to stop reading. You can almost feel the enemy’s breath in your neck. ‘Corvus’ is a fabulous novel that is right-in-your-face, unforgiving and at times heartbreaking.
