Samenvatting

For the first time in recorded history, the ferocious city-states of the Macht now acknowledge a single man as their overlord. Corvus, the strange and brilliant boy-general, is now High King, having united his people in a fearsome, bloody series of battles and sieges. He is not yet thirty years old.

A generation ago, ten thousand of the Macht marched into the heart of the ancient Asurian Empire, and then fought their way back out again, passing into legend. It has been the enduring myth of Corvus' life, for his father was one of those who undertook that march, and his most trusted general, Rictus, was leader of those ten thousand. But he intends to do more.

The preparations will take years, but when they are complete, Corvus will lead an invasion the like of which the world of Kuf has never seen. Under him, the Macht will undertake nothing less than the overthrow of the entire Asurian Empire.

    Geschreven bij Kings of Morning

    Corvus has been king for seven years now and with the united armies of the Macht he sets out to subdue the Empire of Asuria in order to consolidate the world of Kuf.

    ‘Kings of Morning’ starts with a lengthy part written from the point of view of the Asurian royal household including the introduction of quite some characters that are new to the trilogy. As a result it may initially take some time to get into the story, but soon enough they turn out to be a very appealing, multilayered set of personalities. Even the likeable ones are not innocent of cruelty or depravity and it is engrossing to try and discover who the most villainess mastermind is. Like in the previous books of ‘The Macht’ trilogy Paul Kearney employs such an amazingly vivid writing style that it almost feels like you are there yourself, gazing at the sceneries and smelling the scents. In particular it bestows the battle scenes with a terrifying urgency that will make you devour those pages. Paul Kearney can be without pity towards his characters, which is one of the principle ingredients of the unnerving suspense in this book. Who will come through this latest enterprise alive and who will not? It is refreshing to read a story that is devoid of cheap sentimentality and ingenious to be able to experience it from the perspective of the invading party. With this third addition to ‘The Macht’ series Paul Kearney proves that he can consistently turn out excellent novels and that he is truly one of the greats among contemporary fantasy authors, even if he has not (yet) received the recognition that he deserves.
